Serena Owen Serena is a ceramicist who lives and works in Sydney on Darug and Guringai country. She makes wheel formed pieces that show her love of traditional crafts on their surfaces. Inspired by the work of her grandmother and great-aunt - two women obsessed with crafting - she makes glazes to suggest the softness of crochet, or creates fine patterns to explore stitching styles. By referencing fragile pieces of heirloom craft, Serena creates tangible connections to the women who taught her to value the hand-made. Serena completed a Fine Arts degree in 2004 and a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary Visual Arts) in 2005. After about 15 years working in arts administration, community and the not-for-profit sectors, Serena enrolled at Hornsby TAFE for further education in 2019. She completed a Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) in 2020 and an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) in 2022. Serena has exhibited in Sydney and Newcastle, is a Partner/Director of MakingTime Gallery, and her work is stocked at Gallery Lowe & Lee in Newtown and LEDA Gallery in Newcastle. @serenaowenceramics makingtime.com.au Photographer credit: Greg Piper @blinkneye |
